Interview:
sizah: lets start, fatal1ty, you are one of the best pro-gamers in the world, how does that feel ? fatal1ty: It's great. I feel very honored to be here and playing games for a living.
sizah: In my opinion gamers are pro-gamers when they can live with the money they make from gaming, like you, who else are players like you, who can live with gaming ? fatal1ty: I believe some gamers in South Korea make a good living from playing Starcraft. I believe the same thing will happen for us here in the States soon.
sizah: As pro-gamer how much pressure is there on you to win the tournament fatal1ty: I always put a lot of pressure on myself to perform my best at every event. And I also believe there is a lot of pressure from the gamers and fans as well to win it.
sizah: We haven't seen you in action after QuakeCon 2001, before that you where the q3 star, don't you think that it's time to be the quake 3 star nr1 again by winning QuakeCon 2002 ? fatal1ty: I definitely plan on giving it my best at QuakeCON2k2 and win it this time around.
sizah: How do you practise then? Do you have a training mate, or are you using fake nicks on the net ? fatal1ty: I've been practicing with a lot of top gamers from the East Coast about 8 hours a day.
sizah: What do you expect from this event? Are you scared for some big players who are comming too and can steal the prizemoney ? fatal1ty: I don't concern myself with the competition so much, I make sure my game is where I want it and play my game.
sizah: What do you expect of yourself at QuakeCon ? do you think you can make it to the prize money again ? like last year. fatal1ty: I'm not going to say anything besides I'm going to try my best to win it.
sizah: You are the most experienced player, can that help you in a really close game vs a good player who doesn't have that much experience? fatal1ty: Yeah, it's always better to have more experience than the other guy. So when I get him in situations he's never been in before, I'll be victorious and that could mean the game.
sizah: The map list is different then other big tournaments, no tourney2 and a new map, how is ospdm8, what do you think ? do you like the choices QuakeCon made ? fatal1ty: Well, I wish I could have been more involved in the map choices, but I believe all of these maps will be played very well. I believe ospdm8 is an alright choice, but it's a pretty big map and easy to run away.
sizah: what do expect of the euro players: proZaC, belth and LeXeR ? fatal1ty: I believe they'll do well like they've always done before in previous tournaments. It'll be good to see some competition.
sizah: what do your parents think about your practises for a gaming event? fatal1ty: I don't live with my parents, but my Dad supports me 110% about how much I practice and play.
sizah: Do you still like playing quake 3 ? fatal1ty: It's still fun, but there's a lot of pressure to win like you asked earlier. So I have to train very hard and be very focused at all times.
sizah: What is next after QuakeCon for you ? a new game? or The World Cyber Games maybe ? fatal1ty: Not sure yet... We'll see soon though.
sizah: You have your own site what will be launched soon before QuakeCon, what can people find on that site ? fatal1ty: The site has a lot of cool things on it. I'll have my demos, configs and other fatal1ty-related things on it. I'm also working on making a fatal1ty Gaming Mousepad(FATpad) which I'll have for sell on the site hopefully within the next month or so.
sizah: what do you think about the future of gaming and the tournaments (the esports future) fatal1ty: When Doom3 and Quake4 come out, I believe a ton of people will be switching from Quake3 or UT2k3 to play these games. iD software has always been an outstanding company who makes outstanding games, so I can't wait to see what they got up there sleeves for these games. I know Raven Software is doing Quake4, but with the Doom3 Engine, the game will be stellar.
sizah: Which Gaming event did impress you the most? fatal1ty: RazerCPL was the most impressive tournament I've been to. The tournament was run without a hitch and matches started when they said they were going to start and everything. I was really amazed by how well the CPL ran this event. Best one ever.
sizah: I play alot of games and I chat also much, it hidded my social life, do you have the same? and don't you think "hmm, why did I ever started playing games so active" fatal1ty: Well, I was always very involved in sports and hanging out with friends. I believe what started me to play so much games was, I wanted to see if I could do it. I set goals of being #1 in the World and traveling across seas to play a video game and it came true. Then I set goals of becoming CPL Champion of the Year 2 years in a row. I believe now my goal is to keep competing and keep going for CPL Champion of the Year every year.
sizah: Do you follow the europe gaming scene ? fatal1ty: I follow some of the TDM tournaments that go on in Europe. Its fun to see the styles they play there compared to the USA.
sizah: With tdm the europeans's won, they showed they are really better, do you think the europeans have a good chance against the strong USA duellers ? fatal1ty: I don't know what you mean by Europeans showed that they are really better? At frag4, you guys sent your best teams from Europe, and they lost to us, clan Kapitol. cK has been undefeated since CZM and I joined the clan back in 2000.
sizah: What do you prefer: a QuakeCon with duel, with tdm, or maybe both...? fatal1ty: I would of loved to see a QuakeCON2k2 TDM tournament. I believe we'll have one on the side for fun, but nothing to serious. I still love 1v1's because its all up to me to perform and not my teammates.
sizah: How long will you keep playing games ? fatal1ty: Not for certain, I mean I want to play till I'm 30 if its possible, but we'll see.
sizah: Thanks for the interview, good luck, and I hope we can see some nice demos from you. fatal1ty: Thanks for the interview. Hopefully I'll be back over there in Europe again sometime soon to play in some tournaments. Take care. |
